26 things

Post last updated 1 day, 12 hours ago

It's my 26th birthday and I thought to list a few things I've learned or wished I knew sooner in this quarter century of life. Without further ado:

  1. Learn to learn.
  2. When starting a new thing have the mentality that you will inevitably fail/fuck up a considerable amount in the beginning and accept it. You will get better.
  3. Manage your money as well as possible. Try to take as little debt as possible, don't spend on useless things, but also enjoy on your hard earned money.
  4. If you can avoid having a car, do yourself a favor and don't buy one. If you must have one, don't overstretch yourself on a fancy one (learned it the hard way myself).
  5. Have at least some knowledge of as many areas as possible.
  6. First of all, read. Secondly, try to read both fiction and nonfiction. Third, try to read the classics too.
  7. Trust people, but don't be gullible.
  8. Practice at least one sport.
  9. The more you age, the more truth you'll find in "the cost of community is inconvenience".
  10. Ask when you have a question. Tell people when you want something.
  11. As much as you can, don't do overtime.
  12. In most cases, it's not worth holding grudges.
  13. Every once in a while, try to think of times you were in hardship and that you overcame them.
  14. Almost everything settles itself given time, try to not over stress.
  15. You don't have to love your job and not hating it is enough if it pays the bills.
  16. With practice, you can (re)learn almost anything.
  17. Invest in the quality of your sleep and health (I'm sorry fellow Americans).
  18. Cook at home and you'll also enjoy more the times when you dine out.
  19. The gut instinct is often times correct.
  20. Few things are worth dying on a hill for, especially at work.
  21. It's fine to change your views according to new evidence.
  22. School is not useless.
  23. If you've made it, acknowledge at least a part of it is due to luck and stay humble.
  24. Sometimes, only way out is through.
  25. You need to take care of yourself before you can take care of others.
  26. Strive to learn from others, but be aware that in some you'll only really get the gist of it by experiencing it.

I realize many of the points above might seem cringe or cliché, I could've gone deeper with the reasoning behind them, but I think this form makes the most sense for what I wanted to convey.
